Lack of Respect

One area that parents often struggle with is the lack of respect that their children show. However, we must realize that children only do what they see. Many times I will see parents yell at their child "Stop it! What's a matter with you? You're acting stupid!" This type of action and wording breeds a lack of respect. You are your child's first and most important teacher. Take time to think about how you interact with other children and other people. What are you teaching your child through your life? Think about even the tone of your voice and expression of your face.

As you consider the example you are setting remember to always be firm, but fair! You have to hold your children to the rules of the family, even if it is not convenient for you. For example, if the discipline is "no Television" and you only have one, that means no television for you either. Make sure your rules and expectations are clearly known and the results of disobedience. The Bible tells us that all children need discipline, so don't hold back from it, that will only hurt your child in the long run. Then remember to balance your discipline with praise and encouragement. Which also includes a lot of non-verbal elements. Like a smile, wink, thumbs up, etc.
